How Police Spot DUI/OUI DriversLaw Enforcement officers are trained at the police academy how to spot a suspected drunk driver before they can become certified officers. Certain motor vehicle violations are considered by police offices to be signals of potential drunk drivers. These actions or the failure to perform them are clear indicators to experienced officers of a DUI or OUI in progress.
Driving without headlights or leaving your high beams on at all times, leaving your turn signal on or failure to use them, speeding or eratic driving such as drigting from lane to lane or driving well under the speed limit when no others cars or road hazards exist to warrant the action. Also braking suddenly or failure to drive at a green light are considered signs of slowed reflexes brought on by intoxication. Any of the above mentioned actions will cause a police officer to suspect you as a DUI/OUI driver and initiate a traffic stop. The examples cited are all considered classic behavior of a driver operating under the influence. As a Side Note: In Massachusetts sleeping in your car with keys in the ignition while intoxicated is considered a DUI or OUI Offense and is punishable the same as a moving traffic violation.
